He was born into a large family in 1800. His parents were affluent. Goodyear&#8217;s father was a descendant of Stephen Goodyear, who succeeded Governor Eaton as chairman of the company London Merchants, which founded New Haven in 1638.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was a very curious child. This was also evident in his adult life. When the boy turned 17, he decided to leave his parents&#8217; house and go to another city to study the iron business. Goodyear devoted three years to the study of this matter, as well as to hard work. He got the necessary experience and returned to his hometown, where he offered his father to become partners. Here, he managed to open a small hardware store specializing in valuable agricultural tools manufactured by his company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that time, almost all agricultural goods were brought to the US territory from England. People preferred them because there was no trust in local producers. This problem ceased&nbsp; quickly, as Charles proved the quality and reliability of his products. From that moment, Goodyear&#8217;s business went up. He realized that he had found a real gold mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, the business only flourished and was constantly going up. He thought he would become the richest man due to such success. Still, everything did not turn out the way he wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 1830s, our hero experienced a series of health and business problems. He began to suffer from dyspepsia or indigestion. It often resulted in such symptoms as upper abdominal fullness, heartburn, nausea, belching and upper abdominal pain. The general condition and constant malaise affected not only Goodyear&#8217;s health but also his business affairs. The once prosperous company failed. This was a new and innovative field in the first half of the 19th century in New York. Its development has only started. He saw a huge potential in the production of elastic rubber, so he began to study all the nuances of this process in every possible way. He studied every article on this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day he came across the Roxbury Rubber Company, which manufactured lifebuoys. He noticed that the tube used to inflate them was of terrible quality. This greatly reduced the safety and efficiency of the life jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having read about elastic rubber, our hero decided to make the tubes more reliable and efficient. After some time, he managed to do this. He brought his invention to the manager of the company. Charles described the collapse of his company and complete despair, explaining that this was a chance for him to get back on his feet. He told the manager that his tube was much better. However, it took time to fully test its effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goodyear&#8217;s tube was tested for a year. It turned out that his products were far from high-quality. He made a new tube for lifebuoys from chewing gum, which simply rotted during the year-long experiment. He was a self-taught chemist and not everything came easily to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the failure in New York, he had to return to his native city. Despite a series of failures, Charles was not going to stop his research. Having no money, he looked for different ways to continue the investigation. To find at least some capital to continue, Goodyear sold all the furniture, moved his family to a boarding house and went to New York. There, he met a local apothecary, who allowed him to live in the attic and perform his investigations. Many attempts were unsuccessful. Despite all the difficulties, our hero never gave up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He faced many difficulties during the investigation and attempts to get back on his feet. One day Goodyear almost suffocated from a gas that was formed in his laboratory as a result of an experiment. He survived but as a result of the poisoning he developed a fever that almost took his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were also successful moments in Goodyear&#8217;s life. He managed to create the perfect elastic rubber and even founded a factory in New York for the production of clothing, life jackets, shoes and other rubber products. However, Goodyear&#8217;s success was short. In 1837, a panic came, which completely destroyed the fortune and left him penniless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vulcanization_of_rubber\"><\/span>Vulcanization of rubber<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.i-new-york.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/17121825\/rm_xidypngnpwz0bt3lbdvdehp4e_gy_dbdgm2tlskiuwgsu-rauguanljasmfsw9svp9kid0mifdq_vi4ikcbfmvdlvxmvxybo71359mkppt-nzrnqyu084h68qgg98fdl086rtgm3rfr-9bagga0.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numerous failures never stopped Goodyear. During his career, he never gave up and devoted his entire life to rubber production. After some time, he managed to make a new discovery. It was an innovative method of manufacturing rubber shoes. Moreover, he even managed to obtain a patent for this invention, which was bought by the Providence Company based in Rhode Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach had one drawback. At that time, a method of processing rubber that could withstand very high and low temperatures, as well as acids, had not yet been invented. Consequently, all rubber products produced by Goodyear&#8217;s approach constantly became sticky and decomposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During 1830, he had to work in many places. He was desperate to find investors. Charles traveled all over New York, went to Massachusetts and spent some time in Philadelphia and Connecticut. This period became a landmark in his career. He was able to discover that the combination of rubber and sulfur in a hot furnace makes the rubber hard. The inventor called it vulcanization due to the effect of heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our hero lived a challenging but very rich life. He was life-loving and goal-oriented. His work and tenacity helped him. Despite all the difficulties, he managed to achieve the desired result in the production of rubber. His invention became a landmark in the 19th century not only in New York but also throughout the country. Goodyear became the one who invented the chemical process for creating and producing flexible, waterproof and moldable rubber. Undoubtedly, he left a very important mark in the industrial history of New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The death of a prominent New York innovator came suddenly. In 1860, he drove in despair to his dying daughter, hoping to say farewell to her. She passed away before he arrived. Goodyear&#8217;s heart failed, he fainted and died at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York.
